Inspired by the fluid interpretation of history, this series of 6′ x 6′ acrylics addressed painting as documentation and the re-contextualization of an image from it’s original source. Using photo documentation of key events from Southern history, the images were cropped to focus on the witnesses of those events, with extraneous information covered up with obtrusive blocks of primary and secondary colors. As paintings, the factuality of the image is compromised and reduced to flat wallpapers. What appears photographic from a distance dissolves into indistinct brushstrokes on closer inspection.
